課程概述

The course explores the styles of modern German prose writings. We will focus on works by Heinrich von Kleist and the modernists Robert Walser and Franz Kafka, who were equally influenced by Kleist. The three authors address key issues of modern life, mobility, and the uncertainty of knowledge. Furthermore, their self-reflexive works provide insights into the constitution of fictional works.

Through close readings of the texts, we will gain a deeper understanding of style as an integral component of literature and language. The works will also be situated in their historical context, i.e. the enlightenment/romanticism and literary modernism. Our readings will showcase different short prose forms as well as excerpts from longer stories and novels. At the end of the semester, we will analyze a film adaptation.

課程目標
The students learn how to read difficult literary texts and to analyze their style. The method of close reading helps to improve reading comprehension and sheds light on important details in the texts. Through the scrutiny of different styles, students will also improve their own writing. In-class discussions in English challenge the students to work on their communicative foreign language skills. Last but not least, reading the literary texts teaches about key moments of German history and culture from 1800 to the 20th century.
課程要求
As the course language is English, a high proficiency in English speaking and writing is required. The midterm and the final exam will be held in English. In order to read some of the German literary texts in the original, good reading comprehension in German is also required. While I suggest that students should have finished three years of German courses (i.e. German 1-3 or B1 equivalent), students can contact me before the course to ask for exceptions.

Students are required to prepare weekly readings and to engage in classroom discussions actively. Students striving for an "A" should participate frequently and actively in the course.
預期每週課後學習時數
Weekly readings will limited to around 10-15 pages (sometimes less). Optional readings will be provided.
